Anxiety is common in childhood, but when worry begins to interfere with a child's everyday life, relationships, school attendance, sleep or confidence, additional support may be helpful. Children may experience anxiety through excessive worry, physical complaints, avoidance, reassurance seeking, emotional outbursts or difficulty separating from parents and caregivers.
At Interpersonal Therapy, child anxiety counselling in the Sutherland Shire provides children with a safe and supportive space to understand their anxiety and develop strategies for managing overwhelming thoughts, feelings and physical sensations.

Children can experience anxiety for many different reasons. Anxiety may develop following stressful or frightening experiences, significant life changes, difficulties at school or with friendships, family stress, or as part of a child's individual temperament and development.
Counselling looks beyond the anxiety itself to understand what the child may be experiencing and what is contributing to their sense of threat or overwhelm. Therapy is adapted to the child's developmental stage and may incorporate play, creative activities, emotional education, cognitive strategies and nervous-system regulation skills.
Parents and caregivers can also play an important role in helping children feel safe and supported. Where appropriate, counselling includes guidance for caregivers around emotional co-regulation, connection and responding to anxiety in ways that support confidence rather than reinforcing avoidance.
Child anxiety counselling may be helpful when a child is experiencing:
Excessive or persistent worry
Separation anxiety
School refusal or school-related anxiety
Social anxiety
Fear and avoidance
Physical symptoms associated with anxiety
Difficulty sleeping because of worry
Frequent reassurance seeking
Emotional overwhelm or meltdowns
Reduced confidence or participation in everyday activities
