Low self-esteem can affect how you see yourself, your relationships, your confidence and your ability to pursue the things that matter to you. You may find yourself constantly criticising yourself, comparing yourself to others, doubting your decisions, struggling to set boundaries or feeling that you are not good enough. Self-esteem counselling provides a safe, supportive and non-judgemental space to understand where these beliefs and patterns have come from and begin developing a more compassionate relationship with yourself.
At Interpersonal Therapy, I focus on what has happened to you rather than what is wrong with you. Experiences such as criticism, rejection, bullying, difficult relationships, trauma, childhood experiences or repeated experiences of not feeling valued can shape the way we see ourselves. Counselling can help you understand these experiences, challenge unhelpful beliefs and reconnect with your strengths, values and sense of identity. The goal isn't to become a different person — it is to develop greater self-understanding, self-compassion and confidence in who you are.
Sometimes low self-esteem is connected to experiences that have shaped the way you see yourself. Francine Shapiro, the developer of EMDR, highlighted that trauma is not limited to major, life-threatening events. While “capital T” trauma can involve experiences such as abuse, violence or serious accidents, “lowercase t” trauma can include experiences such as rejection, bullying, humiliation, relationship difficulties, loss or repeated criticism that may also leave a lasting emotional impact. Where past experiences continue to influence how you feel about yourself, EMDR may be incorporated into counselling where clinically appropriate, helping to process distressing memories and the negative beliefs that developed around them.
